History of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, LCMS

Prince of Peace began in 1987, Rev. Dr. Arno Meyer was called a a Mission Developer to establish a Lutheran Congregation in southwest Topeka. The intent was to launch an invitational community of faith gathered around Word and Sacrament in service to the larger southwest Topeka community.

The first worship was held on February 14, 1988 in the Villa West Shopping Center store front.  The church was chartered on June 12, 1988, with 241 members signing the roll.

Groundbreaking for the new facility was held in February 1989 with a dedication ceremony following on February 18, 1990.  The central core value of the early community and a core value that continues today, is expressed in the words, "God accepts us the way we are, but loves us too much to leave us that way."

Accepting, caring and welcoming are words that describe Prince of Peace.

Prince of Peace Preschool opened its doors in February 1990.  The school was established as an inclusive community in service to children and families.  Our first preschool director was Sandy Griess.  Patricia Bullock was the Preschool Director for the last 30 years.  She was commissioned in August, 1998. And she retired in the summer of 2020.  Amy Hoytal became the preschool director at that time.

Prince of Peace celebrated its 34th anniversary on February 20, 2022.

Pastor Kevin DeHope accepted our call as our Pastor at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.  He was installed on December 12, 2021.
