Pastor DeHope's December 12th Message

Dear friends in Christ,

If you could hear or read one of your favorite books or stories again for the first time, what would it be? If you could read one of your beloved books with the wonder and delight and awe of that first flip of the page and thrill of wondering what’s next, what story would you pull off the shelf?

When Sam asked the question, I thought for a moment, but had a little trouble choosing. I figured C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe would be high on my list -  which coincidentally was also on his list. Then we were discussing the greatest story ever told. Now, I want to change my answer. If I had to pick a story to hear again for the very first time , it would be the story of the very first Christmas.

The beauty and mystery and simplicity of the Christmas story, is that Jesus didn’t pop down on a cloud in glory, but that he was born and lived…a real person. A real savior for all our very real problems of sin and death. It’s unexpected and wild that it all happened this way. Jesus was born of a real woman, in a real town and laid in a real manger – God came in the flesh for us to be our savior.

As you hear the Christmas story again this year, try to imagine it was the first time. The true story of the birth of Christ to save the outcast, the weak, the lost, lonely and lowly. Jesus came for the rich and poor alike-for the people we like and the people we don’t. That’s what makes this the best story ever. Jesus was born to save us - not at our best, but at our worst. Jesus comes down to rescue not the best of us, but the worst of us. All of us.

God grant us joy and wonder to always hear and treasure it. God grant us the boldness and excitement to share the glad tiding of great joy that Unto you this day, a savior is born!
